Called Castrum Novum at the time of the romans, later changing its name to Castel San Flaviano in honour of the patriarch of Constantinople. After various looting and raids by the saracens, the town was rebuilt by the duke Giuliantonio Acquaviva, from which it takes the name of Iulia Nova.
